સ્ટીવ જોબ્સ“માનવીએ હંમેશાં કર્મ, ભાગ્ય અને ઈશ્વર પર શ્રદ્ધા રાખવી જોઈએ. આમ કરવાથી તમારી દરેક ઇચ્છા પૂરી થઈ શકે છે

દુનિયાને બદલી દેનારા બહુ ઓછું જીવે છે. આદિ શંકરાચાર્યે ઘણા અલ્પ આયુમાં મહાન ગ્રંથોની રચના કરી અને ઓછી વયે જ મૃત્યુ પામ્યા. સ્વામી રામતીર્થ માંડ ૩૩ વર્ષ જ જીવ્યા. પ્રેસિડેન્ટ જ્હોન એફ. કેનેડી ભરયુવાનીમાં મૃત્યુ પામ્યા. મેરેલિન મનરો યુવાવસ્થામાં જ મોતને ભેટી. મધુબાલા બહુ ના જીવી. કલાપી યુવાનીમાં જ મૃત્યુ પામ્યા. રાજીવ ગાંધી પણ લાંબું આયુષ્ય ભોગવી ના શક્યા. હવે આ તેજસ્વી સ્ટાર્સની યાદીમાં સ્ટીવ જોબ્સ એ છેલ્લા સિતારા હતા.

આખી દુનિયાના લોકોના હાથમાં આઈ-મેક, આઈ-પેડ, આઈ-પોડ અને આઈ-ફોનને હાથમાં રમતાં કરી મૂકનાર  માત્ર ૫૬ વર્ષની વયે જ મૃત્યુ પામ્યા. તા. ૨૯મી ફેબ્રુઆરી,૧૯૫૫ના રોજ સાન ફ્રાન્સિસ્કોમાં જન્મેલા સ્ટીવ જોબ્સ એક બળવાખોર બાળક હતા. તેમના પિતા ઇજિપ્શીયન-આરબ (સિરિયા) અને માતા અમેરિકન મહિલા હતાં. માતા-પિતા ગરીબ અને મજૂરી કરનારા હોઈ બાળક પોલ અને જોબ્સ નામના યુગલને દત્તક આપી દેવાયું હતું. જેમણે બાળકને સ્ટીવન પોલ એવું નામ આપ્યું. તેમને અમેરિકામાં ઓરેગાવની પોર્ટલેન્ડ ખાતે આવેલી ટીડ્સ કોલેજમાં દાખલ કરવામાં આવ્યા, પરંતુ એ ભણતર ઉપયોગી ના લાગતાં તેમણે સ્વયં ભણવાનું છોડી દીધું. ૧૯૭૬માં 'એપ્રિલ ફૂલ'ના દિવસે"એક ગેરેજમાં તેમણે એક મિત્ર સાથે'એપલ' કંપનીની શરૂઆત કરી. તે પછી એમણે કદીયે પાછું વળીને જોયું નહીં. ફેબ્રુઆરી, ૨૦૧૦ સુધીમાં આ કંપનીની કુલ સંપત્તિ ૭૫.૧૮ અબજ ડોલર પર પહોંચી. સ્ટીવ જોબની અંગત સંપત્તિ ૮.૮ અબજ ડોલર સુધી પહોંચી.

સ્ટીવ જોબ્સના જીવનમાં અનેક ચઢાવ-ઉતાર આવ્યા. તેમને જન્મ આપનાર માતાનું નામ જોઆન કેરોલ સ્કીબલ હતું. જ્યારે અસલી પિતાનું નામ અબ્દુલ ફત્તાહ જિંદાલી હતું. અબ્દુલ ફત્તાહ સિરિયાથી સ્ટુડન્ટ એક્સચેન્જ કાર્યક્રમ હેઠળ અમેરિકામાં ભણવા આવ્યા હતા. તેઓ કુંવારી માતાના પેટે જન્મ્યા હતા. લોકોની મજાકથી બચવા જ બાળક પોલ અને કલારા જોબ્સને સોંપી દેવામાં આવ્યું હતું. કહેવાય છે કે, સ્ટીવ જોબ્સ કદી તેમનાં અરબી માતા-પિતાને મળી શક્યા નહોતા. કહેવાય છે કે, તેમના અસલી પિતા અબ્દુલ ફત્તાહ જિંદાલીએ પુત્ર સ્ટીવ જોબ્સને મળવાની ઇચ્છા વ્યક્ત કરી હતી, પરંતુ તે શક્ય બન્યું નહોતું. સ્ટીવ જોબ્સને લાગ્યું હતું કે, "મારા પિતાની નજર મારી સંપત્તિ પર છે."

કોલેજમાંથી જાતે જ બહાર નીકળી ગયા બાદ સ્ટીવ જોબ્સનું જીવન આરામદાયક નહોતું. તેઓ એક મિત્રના ઘરના લિવિંગ રૂમની ફર્શ પર જ સૂઈ જતા હતા. કોકાકોલા પી લીધા બાદ તેની બોટલ દુકાનદારને પાછી આપવા જતા જેના તેમને પાંચ સેન્ટ મળતા હતા અને એ પાંચ-પાંચ સેન્ટ ભેગા કરી તેઓ તેમના માટે ફૂડ ખરીદતા. તેઓ જ્યાં રહેતા હતા ત્યાંથી ૭ માઈલ દૂર હરેકૃષ્ણ મંદિર હતું અને ત્યાં સારું જમવાનું મળતું. સારા ફૂડ માટે તેઓ દર રવિવારે સાત માઈલ ચાલીને હરેકૃષ્ણ મંદિરે જતા હતા. આધ્યાત્મિકતાની ખોજમાં તેઓ ભારત આવ્યા અને નશીલી દવાઓની સાથે કેટલાક પ્રયોગ પણ કર્યા. બૌદ્ધ ધર્મથી તેઓ ભારે પ્રભાવિત થયા. તેઓ હિપ્પી સંસ્કૃતિ સાથે જ મોટા થયા હોવા છતાં પાછળથી બૌદ્ધ ધર્મ અપનાવી લીધો હતો.

વિશ્વભરનાં બાળકોમાં લોકપ્રિય એનિમેશન ફિલ્મ્સ જેવી કે 'ટોય સ્ટોરી' અને 'ફાઇન્ડિંગ નેમો' બનાવનાર કોમ્પ્યુટર એનિમેશન કંપની- 'પિક્સર' પણ તેમનું જ સર્જન હતું."અબજોની સંપત્તિના માલિક હોવા છતાં સ્ટીવ જોબ્સ જીન્સ અને બંધ ગળાનું બ્લેક ટીશર્ટ જ પહેરતા. માથા પર ટૂંકા વાળ રાખતા. સ્ટીવને ભાગ્યે જ કોઈએ સૂટમાં જોયા હશે. યુનિર્વિસટીમાં પ્રવચન આપવા ગયા ત્યારે પણ જીન્સ અને ટી-શર્ટમાં જ. તેઓ વસ્ત્રો અને ઠાઠમાઠ કે દેખાડાના બદલે પોતાની બુદ્ધિ, કલ્પનાશક્તિ અને સમજદારીમાં વધુ ભરોસો કરતા હતા. કોમ્પ્યુટરને 'પર્સનલ'બનાવનાર અને ઇન્ટરનેટને લોકોના ખિસ્સા સુધી પહોંચાડનાર સ્ટીવ જોબ્સ માર્કેટ સર્વે જેવી પરંપરાગત બિઝનેસ પ્રણાલી પર બહુ આધાર રાખવાના બદલે પોતાની કલ્પનાશક્તિ પર બહુ વિશ્વાસ રાખતા હતા અને પોતાની સમજદારી પર જ નવાં નવાં સંશોધનો કરતા હતા. તેમણે જાતે કોઈ નવા કોમ્પ્યુટરની શોધ કરી નહોતી. બલકે ઉપલબ્ધ સંશોધનોને લોકો માટે વધુ સુવિધાજનક અને વ્યવહારુ બનાવી દીધા હતા. એક નાનકડા આઈપોડમાં તેમણે સેંકડો ગીતો ભરી દેવાની કમાલ કરી બતાવી હતી."તેઓ એક દૃષ્ટા હતા. તેઓએ ચીલાચાલુ અને રૂઢિગત પરંપરાથી ઊલટું વિચારવા માંડયું. મધ્યમવર્ગ પરિવારમાંથી આવતા હોઈ બીજા અનેક સંઘર્ષોનો સામનો કરવો પડયો. તેમણે પોતાના આગવા ખ્યાલોથી નવા રસ્તા શોધ્યા અને પરંપરાગત વ્યાપાર અને ઉદ્યોગ જગતની શિકલ જ બદલી નાખી. નવા સમય માટે નવા પડકારો તેમની સામે હતા. તેમના માટે ભારે મોટા મૂડીરોકાણ અને ભારે મોટા બજારના નેટવર્ક કરતાં નવી કલ્પનાશક્તિઓનું મહત્ત્વ વધુ હતું અને તેમાં જ તેઓ સફળ નીવડયા. તેમની આ સફળતાના કારણે વિશ્વ વિખ્યાત ફિલ્મકાર સ્ટીવન સ્પિલબર્ગે પણ કહેવું પડયું કે, "સ્ટીવ જોબ્સ એ થોમસ આલ્વા એડિસન પછીની મહાન પ્રતિભા હતા." ઘણાએ તેમને નવા સમયના 'હીરો'- નાયક કહ્યા.

એક નાનકડા ગેરેજમાં શરૂ કરાયેલી કંપનીમાં આજે ૪૦૦૦થી વધુ કર્મચારીઓ કામ કરે છે. છેલ્લાં ૧૧ વર્ષમાં એપલ કંપનીના શેરોની કિંમત ૧૨ ગણી વધી છે. ૧૯૮૦માં જેની કિંમત ૩.૫૯ ડોલર હતી તેની કિંમત ૨૦ સપ્ટેમ્બર, ૨૦૧૧ના રોજ ૪૧૩.૪૫ ડોલર સુધી પહોંચી છે. વિશ્વમાં આજે ૩૫૭ જેટલા'એપલ'ના સ્ટોર્સ છે. અબજોનું ટર્નઓવર ધરાવતા સ્ટીવ જોબ્સની વિશ્વના લોકોને સલાહ છે કે, "ડિઝાઈનનો મતલબ એ નથી કે તે કેવી દેખાય છે. ડિઝાઈનનો મતલબ એ છે કે, તે કેવી રીતે કામ કરે છે તે પણ સમજવું જોઈએ. એ જ રીતે વિશ્વના સૌથી શ્રીમંત વ્યક્તિ બનવાનો કોઈ અર્થ જ નથી. રાત્રે સૂતી વખતે તમને મનમાં થવું જોઈએ કે, આજે મેં કોઈ અર્થપૂર્ણ અને શાનદાર કામ કર્યું છે. બીજા લોકોના વિચારો સાંભળી તમે તમારા અંતરાત્માના અવાજને ગૂંગળાવશો નહીં. એ એમની સોચ હતી. તમે તમારી રીતે"વિચારો. આપણે આપણા દિલનો અને અંતરાત્માનો જ અવાજ સાંભળવો જોઈએ. તેનું જ મહત્ત્વ છે. તમારે શું બનવું તે તમારે જ નક્કી કરવાનું છે. મારા માટે તો બિઝનેસનું મોડેલ છે 'ધી બીટલ્સ.' એ ચાર જણે એક બીજાની નકારાત્મક પ્રવૃત્તિઓ પર કાબૂ મેળવ્યો હતો. તે પછી એકબીજાને સહારો આપ્યો. એ ચારેય જણે મળીને કોઈ એક કે બે જણના મુકાબલે તેઓ વધુ 'મહાન' બન્યા.

સ્ટીવ જોબ્સ તમામ બાબતોમાં બંડખોર હતા."તેમના ધંધાદારી હરીફોની સામે પણ તેઓ આક્રમક અને સ્વાભિમાની હતા. તેઓ એપલના હેડક્વાર્ટર પર જાય ત્યારે તેમની ર્મિસડિઝ કાર અપંગો માટેના ર્પાિંકગ સ્લોટમાં જ પાર્ક કરતા હતા. તેઓ અપંગ નહોતા છતાં બંડ કરવું તે તેમનો સ્વભાવ હતો. છેલ્લે છેલ્લે સ્ટેનફોર્ડ યુનિર્વિસટીના વિદ્યાર્થીઓને સંબોધતા તેમણે કહેલી વાતો ચિરસ્મરણીય રહેશે. તેમણે કહ્યું હતું : "માનવીએ હંમેશાં કર્મ, ભાગ્ય અને ઈશ્વર પર શ્રદ્ધા રાખવી જોઈએ. આમ કરવાથી તમારી દરેક ઇચ્છા પૂરી થઈ શકે છે. હું ભણવાનું કદી પૂરું કરી ના શક્યો, પરંતુ હિંમત હાર્યો નહીં. મેં દિલનો અવાજ સાંભળ્યો અને સિદ્ધિઓ"હાંસલ કરી. જીવન બહુ ટૂંકું છે. બીજાની વાતો સાંભળી તેમનું અનુકરણ ના કરો. સ્ટે હંગરી- સ્ટે ફુલીશ. અર્થાત્ જ્ઞાનની પિપાસા હંમેશાં રાખો અને અભિમાન કદી કરશો નહીં. મારું મૃત્યુ નજીક છે. હું બીજા કોઈ માટે જગા કરતો જાઉં છું."

સ્ટીવ જોબ્સ વિશ્વનાં કરોડો બાળકો માટે એક પ્રેરણા છે. તેમણે જે વાત શબ્દોમાં કહી નથી તે એ છે કે "જિંદગી તમારી શરતો પર જીવો."

 

સપનાંઓની કોઈની મોનોપોલી નથી. સપનાં સેવો, સફળ થા

જેનાં જીવનનાં સાહસોની સફળતા કરતાં નિષ્ફળતાનું લિસ્ટ લાંબુ છે તે 'એપલ' કોમ્પ્યૂટરના સ્વામી સ્ટિવ જોબ્સના જીવન વિશે બીજો હપ્તો લખવાનું પ્રયોજન એ છે કે તેણે સાહસિક-યુવાન-બિઝનેસમેનો માટે પ્રેરણાદાયી સંદેશો આપ્યો છે. તેના જીવન વિશે ૧૦૩ પુસ્તકો લખાયાં છે અને કહ્યું છે કે રિપીટેડ ફેલ્યોરમાંથી જ જીવનની પરમસિદ્ધિ મળે છે. 

સ્ટિવ જોબ્સના મરણ વિશે બબ્બે વખત પ્રતિષ્ઠિત સમાચાર સંસ્થાઓએ સમાચારો આપેલા. બ્લુમબર્ગ નામની ખૂબ જ પ્રતિષ્ઠિત ટીવી ચેનલે તો સ્ટિવ જોબ્સના જીવન વિશે ૨૫૦૦ શબ્દોની મરણનોંધ પણ પ્રગટ કરેલી. તે પછી ૩-૧૦-૨૦૦૮ના રોજ સ્ટિવ જોબ્સને મરણતોલ હૃદયહુમલો થયો છે તેવા ખોટા સમાચારો સીએનએનએ પ્રસારિત કરેલા. એ પ્રકારે કયુબાના ક્રાંતિકારી પ્રમુખ ફિડેલ કેસ્ટ્રો અને પોપ જ્હોન પોલ બીજાના મરણના પણ ખબર છપાયેલા તેમાંથી તેમને લાંબુ આયુષ્ય મળેલું છે. છેલ્લે છેલ્લે સ્ટિવ જોબ્સના લીવરના ટ્રાન્સપ્લાન્ટનું ઓપરેશન ફેલ ગયું છે તેવા સમાચાર હતા.

એ. ટી. એન્ડ ટી. નામની જગવિખ્યાત સોફ્ટવેર કંપનીના ભારતીય વડા દીપક શેઠીએ કહ્યું છે કે 'ફેલ્યોર ઈઝ પ્રાઈમરી વેહિકલ ફોર સક્સેસ.' સફળતા માટેની ઝડપી છૂકછૂક ગાડીમાં બેસવું હોય તો નિષ્ફળતાથી નિરાશ ન થાઓ. જો આપણા વડીલો યુવાન લોકોને જીવનમાં નવા નવા અખતરા કરવાની છૂટ આપે, નવા નવા જીવન-પ્રયોગો કરવાની છૂટ આપે તો તેને નિષ્ફળ થવાની સ્વતંત્રતા પણ આપવી જોઈએ. 

પ્રમુખ અબ્રાહમ લિંકને ૧૮૩૧માં બિઝનેસમાં ફેલ જઈને દેવાળું કાઢેલું. ૧૮૩૨માં રાજ્ય વિધાનસભાની ચૂંટણી હારી ગયેલા. પાછા બિઝનેસમાં આવ્યા ત્યારે અબ્રાહમ લિંકન ફરી ફેલ થયેલા. તેના હૃદયની જીગર-સ્વીટહાર્ટ ૩૫ની વયે ગુજરી ગઈ. લિંકનને ૧૮૩૬માં નર્વસ બ્રેકડાઉન થઈ ગયેલું. કોંગ્રેસની ચૂંટણીમાં ૧૮૪૩માં હારી ગયેલા. ઉપપ્રમુખની ચૂંટણીમાં અને સેનેટમાં હારી ગયા પછી છેક ૧૮૬૦માં લિંકન પ્રમુખ થયેલા. બિલ ગેટ્સ માઈક્રોસોફ્ટની સફળતાની વાતો થાય છે પણ તેની 'ઓમેગા' નામની ડેટાબેઈઝ ફેલ ગયેલી. આઈ.બી.એમ. સાથેની ભાગીદારીમાં બિલ ગેટ્સે કરોડો રૂપિયા ગુમાવેલા.

સ્ટિવ જોબ્સે તેના જીવનમાં શ્રેણીબદ્ધ નિષ્ફળતા પછી સફળતાના બાર નિયમો ઘડેલા. (૧) તમે જે પ્રવૃત્તિને ચાહતા હો તે કામ જ હાથમાં લો અને છેવટે હાથમાં લીધેલા કામને પ્રેમ કરો. (૨) બી-ડિફરન્ટ-બીજા કરતાં ચીલો ચાતરીને ચાલો. અનોખા થાઓ. (૩) ડુ યોર બેસ્ટ-સફળ થવા કોઈ પ્રયત્ન બાકી ન રાખો. (૪) દરેક નિષ્ફળતાનું પૃથક્કરણ કરો. (૫) ધંધામાં સાહસ કરો. (૬) નાનેથી શરૂઆત કરો પણ ઘ્યેય ઊચું રાખો. (૭) જે વ્યવસાયમાં જાઓ તેના નેતા બનો. બીજા લોકો માટે પ્રેરણારૂપ બનો. (૮) હંમેશાં ફોક્સ જાળવો. (૯) ચારેકોરથી લોકોનો સહકાર મેળવો. (૧૦) સતત-સતત કંઈક નવું કરો. (૧૧) તમારી નિષ્ફળતામાંથી શીખો. (૧૨) સતત નવું શીખતા રહેવા પુસ્તકો વાંચો. બીજાનાં જીવનચરિત્રો વાંચો.

'ફોર્બસ' નામના સફળ આર્થિક પાક્ષિકના માલિક માલ્કમ ફોર્બસે કહેલું કે ફેલ્યોર ઇઝ સકસેસ ઇફ વી લર્ન ફ્રોમ ફેલ્યોર. આ જાતની શીખ જગતના તમામ સફળ લોકો આપે છે. નિષ્ફળતામાંથી શીખીએ તો નિષ્ફળતા એ એક મોટો શિક્ષક છે. સ્ટિવ જોબ્સ કેમ નિષ્ફળતાઓને પાર કરીને સફળતાની ટોચે આવ્યો છે તે માટે જેફ્રી એસ. યંગનું પુસ્તક 'ધ ગ્રેટેસ્ટ સેકન્ડ એક્ટ ઇન બિઝનેસ હિસ્ટ્રી' નામનું પુસ્તક વાંચવું જોઈએ. 

જેફ્રી યંગે સૌપ્રથમ સ્ટિવ જોબ્સની આત્મકથા લખી છે. તમે પોતે લોહી-પાણી એક કરીને અને ઉજાગરા કરીને તેમ જ પ્રેમલગ્નવાળી પ્રિયતમાને પૂરતો સમય આપવાને બદલે કંપનીમાં જ ઘ્યાન રાખો તેવા વલણથી 'એપલ' કંપની સ્થાપી હોય તે બીજાઓ ઝૂંટવી જાય તેની કેવી હાલત થાય? સ્ટિવ જોબ્સે આવી હાલત સહન કરી હતી. 'એપલ'માંથી હાંકી કઢાયા પછી દસ દસ વર્ષ સ્ટિવ જોબ્સ કોઈ પણ કામ વગર રખડયો હતો. 

એ પછી બમણા જોરથી તેણે એપલ કંપની પાછી હાંસલ કરીને આજે ૨૦૧૦માં તેણે 'આઈ પોડ' અને 'આઈ પેડ' બજારમાં મૂકીને ડંકો વગાડયો છે. એપલની કોમ્પ્યૂટર ઈન્ડસ્ટ્રીમાં સફળ થયા પહેલાં તે ડિઝની વર્લ્ડ અને ફિલ્મી દુનિયામાં સફળ થયો પછી સંગીતની દુનિયામાં સફળ થયો હતો. સ્ટિવ જોબ્સે કોઈ પેપ્સીના જોખમી પીણાં કે નાસ્તા વેચીને જગતના લોકોની તંદુરસ્તી બગાડવાનો ધંધો કર્યો નહોતો. 

'એપલ' કંપનીને ઊચે લાવવા સ્ટિવ જોબ્સે, જહોન સ્કલી નામના માર્કેટિંગ વિઝાર્ડને દોસ્ત બનાવ્યો ત્યારે ૧૯૮૩માં કોકાકોલા અને પેપ્સી વચ્ચેના યુદ્ધમાં પેપ્સીને આગળ લાવવા જહોન સ્કલી પુરુષાર્થ કરતો હતો. સ્ટિવ જોબ્સે તેને એક રાત્રે બોલાવી પરોઢિયા સુધી સમજાવીને કહ્યું કે 'શું તું તારી આખી જિંદગી એક નક્કામા અને આરોગ્યને હાનિ કરનારા પેપ્સીના પીણાંને પ્રચલિત કરીને વેડફવા માગે છે? આ દુનિયાને કંઈ ઉપયોગી થાય તેવા મારા પર્સનલ કોમ્પ્યૂટરને પ્રચલિત કર જેથી નવયુવાનો તેમના જ્ઞાનને આધારે અને બીજાને પણ ઉપયોગી થાય. અને શું થયું? પેપ્સીના માર્કેટિંગને છોડીને જહોન સ્કલી એપલ કોમ્પ્યૂટરનો માર્કેટિંગ મેનેજર બન્યો! અને તે પણ ઓછા પગારે.

જ્યારે 'એપલ'ના પ્રથમ સફળ સાહસ પછી સ્ટિવ જોબ્સ બીજા સાહસમાં નિષ્ફળ ગયો ત્યારે તેણે એક અદભૂત સૂત્ર પોતાને માટે (અને જગતના યુવાનો માટે) નક્કી કર્યું-ધ હેવીનેસ ઓફ બીઈગ સકસેસફુલ મસ્ટ બી રિપ્લેસ્ડ બાય બીકમિંગ એ બિગિનર અગેઈન. એક ધંધો હાથમાં લઈને તેની સફળતાનો ભાર સતત વેંઢારવા કરતાં નવેસરથી કંઈક પ્રારંભ કરવાનો સ્પિરિટ રાખવો જોઈએ. સ્ટિવ જોબ્સે નેકસ્ટ નામની કંપની સ્થાપી, જેણે વર્લ્ડ વાઈડ વેબ (ડબ્લ્યુડબ્લ્યુડબ્લ્યુ)ની શોધ કરી છે. એ કંપની લગભગ દેવાળું ફૂંકવામાં હતી પણ તેની આ વર્લ્ડ વાઈડ વેબને આજે તમે, હું અને આપણે બધા વાપરીએ છીએ.

૪-૫-૦૯ના રોજ બ્રુસ ગ્રિઅરસને 'વિધરિંગ ધ સ્ટોર્મ'-જીવનનાં તોફાનોનો મુકાબલો નામનું પુસ્તક પ્રગટ કર્યું છે. તે ખરેખર દરેક બિઝનેસમેને વાંચવા જેવું છે. વોલ્ટ ડિઝની, હેન્રી ફોર્ડ, વિન્સ્ટન ચર્ચિલ અને થોમસ એડિસન તમામ શરૂના જીવનમાં નિષ્ફળ ગયા હતા. યુવાનોને સ્ટિવ જોબ્સ કહેતો કે તમે સપનાં સેવો-ડ્રીમર થાઓ. Ten Truths About Teaching with Technology : Article from US magazine

I have been asked by a few different people to boil down the "essence" of teaching with technology, whatever that means.  I doubt this is what they meant, but this is what they got, and I share it humbly with you.

Ten Truths about Teaching with Technology

1.  Teaching WITHOUT technology is just not acceptable any longer.  Can you imagine a teacher refusing to implement special education accommodations?  It would be a travesty.  Same thing with current technology.  New generations of teachers will (I hope) realize that there are always going to be new technologies to master every year.  Previous generations look at learning new technology as something they want to have to do once and then be done.  We need to change the way we look at learning to integrate technology to see it as a fluid evolution and not a checklist of skills.

2.  Online learning is inevitable, and is arriving soon.  The only question at this point is the model upon which it will ultimately become standard.  Students already learn plenty online.  It would be nice if Algebra or French were a part of that.

3.  Online learning does not mean students stare at screens for a majority of the time.  Online learning is used to interact with instructors and other students about experiences that should be designed to be off-line. For instance, students video record the building of the volcano experiment, and then upload to a chat setting so others can give feedback on the process or result.

4.  Powerpoints do not really signify effective instructive integration of technology.  Face it, Powerpoints have their place, but they are essentially an overhead projector.  True technology integration breaks the barrier between curriculum and student.  A Powerpoint alone cannot do that.

5.  Banning cell phone use in schools has created a problem.  For years, teachers wished for a world where every student had a calendar, calculator, dictionary, and word processor with them at all times, and now that most students have it all in one device in their pockets, they are asked to keep them hidden.  If teachers embrace the opportunity to harness the power of handheld devices, we put the power of the world at their fingertips.  By vilifying the cell phone, we have told students that the device is only for fun, and has no real connection to learning at all.  I doubt that's going to be a good thing.

6.  Education reform is about a lot of things, but the driver for all of them is society.  Society is plugged in and online and collaborating like never before.  Unfortunately, many classrooms seem to have missed the memo.  Ed reform tries, clumsily, to address this schism.

7. Facebook and Twitter are the most powerful collaboration and communication tools ever seen on the planet.  Both have toppled regimes and changed the world.  How can we ignore their potential impact as teaching tools?

8. Bloom's Taxonomy has never been more relevant, and learning with technology is at the top of the ladder.  Any teacher, tutor, or pothead girlfriend can get a kid to memorize a few states and capitals; but textured, deep learning that includes real synthesis and evaluation of ideas is far more relevant in the global classroom.

9.  Technology is cheap.  In fact, many simple changes to accommodate students' personal devices, to use cloud-based applications, and to utilize the expertise of people all over the world rather than just those who fit in the staff lounge, are all low-cost alternatives to very high-priced alternatives like adding staff or classrooms.

10.  The shift needs to be bidirectional.  Teachers who are early-adopters and innovators are important to the evolution, but administrators who cultivate a culture of innovation and engaged learning are key for any real progress into the 21st Century.

 

Cope with Your Incompetent Boss

Cope with Your Incompetent Boss Everyone complains about his or her boss from time to time. But dealing with a truly incompetent boss is frustrating and exhausting. Here are three strategies to handle the situation: Have empathy. Resist the temptation to demonize, and try to see things from your boss's perspective. Perhaps she is under extreme pressure from her superior. Or, maybe he is still learning the skills to do his job. Create boundaries. Don't let the circumstances get you down. Put up psychological limits so that your boss's incompetence doesn't negatively impact your health  or well-being. Move on. When all else fails, consider looking for a transfer to a new boss or a new employer. Don't  suffer needlessly.

The Obstacle in our Path

In ancient times, a king had a boulder placed on a road. The king then hid himself and watched to see if anyone would remove the huge rock. Some of the king's wealthiest merchants and courtiers came by and simply walked around it.

Many loudly blamed the king for not keeping the roads clear, but none did anything about getting the big stone out of the way. A peasant then came along carrying a load of vegetables. On approaching the boulder, the peasant laid down his burden and tried to move the stone to the side of the road. 

After much pushing and straining, he finally succeeded. As the peasant picked up his load of vegetables, he noticed a purse lying in the road where the boulder had been. 

The purse contained many gold coins and a note from the king indicating that the gold was for the person who removed the boulder from the roadway. The peasant learned what many others never understand.


Every obstacle presents an opportunity to improve.

A man is condemned to death. He has to choose between three rooms. The first is full of raging fires, the second is full of assassins with loaded guns, and the third is full of lions that haven't eaten in three years. Which room is the safest?


The Horse and the Hay
A horse is tied to a rope six feet long and there is a bale of hay 8 feet away.  How can the horse get to the hay if he does not bite or undo the rope?


Who is that man?
John and Mark are chatting at a party.  John notices a man on the other side of the room and points him out to Mark.  John says: "Brothers and sisters, I have none, but that man's father is my father's son." Who is john talking about?


How can this be?
A man and his son where involved in a road traffic accident, the father died at the scene of the accident and the little boy was rushed to hospital.  When he arrived the surgeon said "I cannot operate on this boy, he is my son." How can this be?


Men in Black
A man wearing all black, black shoes, socks, trousers, top even a balaclava.  He is walking down a street where all the street lights were off.  A lady comes towards him in a car and stops to let him across the road. How did the driver see the man? 


Round or Square?
Why is it better to have round manhole covers than square ones?


Party Punch
A man went to a friend's party and drank some punch.  He then left early. Later everyone else drank the punch and died of poisoning.  Nobody had anything to the punch after the man left.  He did not die and he is not superman! How is this possible?


Barman with a Gun
A man walks into a bar, sits down and asks the barman for a glass of water.  With that the barman pulls a gun out of his pocket and points it at the man.  The man stands up, says "Thank you" and leaves the bar.  Why did the man express his gratitude?


Crossing the River
A man has to get a fox, a chicken, and a sack of corn across a river. 
He has a rowboat, and it can only carry him and one other thing. 
If the fox and the chicken are left together, the fox will eat the chicken. 
If the chicken and the corn are left together, the chicken will eat the corn. 
How does the man do it?

Round or Square
A square manhole cover can be turned and dropped down the diagonal of the manhole.  A round cover cannot fall into the manhole.  From a practical view point, it's much easier to move as it can be rolled.


Party Punch
The poison in the punch came from the ice cubes.  When the man drank the punch, the ice was fully frozen.  Gradually it melted, poisoning the punch.


Barman with a Gun
The man had hiccups.  The barman recognised this and decided to shock the man to get rid of them.  It worked so the man left without his water.


Crossing the River
The man and the chicken cross the river, (the fox and corn are safe together), he leaves the chicken on the other side and goes back across.

The man then takes the fox across the river, and since he can't leave the fox and chicken together, he brings the chicken back.

Again, since the chicken and corn can't be left together, he leaves the chicken and he takes the corn across and leaves it with the fox.

He then returns to pick up the chicken and heads across the river one last time.

Which Wolf Wins?

An old man is teaching his grandson about life. "A fight is going on inside me," he said to the boy. "It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves – a good wolf and a bad wolf.

One wolf is negative - he is angry, envy, sorrowful, regretful, greedy, arrogant, self-pitiful, guilty and resentful. He tells lies all the time and has false pride.

He continued, "The other is positive - he is encouraging, peaceful, loving, hopeful, sincere, kindness and humble. He is full of empathy, generous and compassionate.
The grandfather explained that "the same fight is going on inside you - and inside every other person, too."

The boy thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather, "Which wolf will win?"
The old farmer simply replied, "The one you feed the most."

Positive thinking is just as easy as negative thinking, but worthwhile.

 

Sharpen the Saw

There was once a woodcutter who was working feverishly to saw down a tree.  A young man came across the woodcutter and asked "What are you doing?" 

"Can't you see" the woodcutter replied, "I am sawing down this tree."

The young man sat down and asked the woodcutter to take a break and sharpen his saw as he looked exhausted. The woodcutter explained to the young man that he had been sawing for five hours straight and did not have time to take a break. 

The young man looked at the woodcutter and said "If you sharpen the saw, you would cut down the tree much faster." 

The woodcutter said "I don't have time to sharpen the saw. Can you not see I am too busy."

Focus on What you Want

Will Smith says: 
"People ask me about racism in Hollywood.  Why would I acknowledge racism?  When you acknowledge the obstacle you actually give it power.  I want to walk through it.  I want to walk over it.  I want to walk around it.  So my preoccupation is with the power that we all possess individually."

There are 3 steps:

1. Focus with clarity on the goal.
2. Imagine your goal as if it were already happening.
3. We commit ourselves to it. We know in our hearts that this will be. There is absolutely no doubt.

A quote from the movie The Pursuit of Happiness - "Don't ever let somebody tell you, you can't do something… not even me.  You got a dream...you gotta protect it.  People can't do something themselves, they wanna tell you, you can't do it.  You want something?  Go get it.  Period."

The more you imagine your goal, the quicker you will accomplish it.
