HARD EARNED MONEY...

There use to live a well off businessman- "Dhanraj" in a small town. He had a son named Chander. Because he was the only son his all demands and wishes were fulfilled without any thought and as a result he became very insensitive towards the money and efforts put in by his parents. When he grew up as a youth, he used to waste lots of money and roam around with his friends.

Dhanraj was getting old day by day and he wanted that his son should learn about his business and take care of his hard earned money. But Chander was spoiled so much that he could close his entire business and waste the entire money. With all these thoughts Dhanraj became very worried. He wanted to teach a lesson to his son. So he called his son and said, " You must earn some money today. Go any where, do anything, but earn some money otherwise you will not get your food today.

Chander was very lazy. He did not even tried to find a job. He went to his mother and requested for a rupee so that he can show it as an hard earned money. But his mother refused to give. He insisted again and again then she finally gave him a rupee.

In the evening Chander's father asked him," Did you earn anything?" Chander showed him a rupees coin. Dhanraj told him to drop that coin in the well. He did so immediately without any hesitation.

However, Chander's mother has told his father about that coin. Dhanraj ask his wife to go and live with her parents for few days. And he ordered Chander again to earn some money. This time he approached her sister for the same thing and in the evening showed that money to his father. Father this time again asks him to drop that coin in the well. He did without a thought. Dhanraj checked with his daughter regarding the money, she told him that Chander has taken one rupee coin from her. Dhanraj also request his daughter to go to her in laws for some time. And again ordered Chander again to earn some money otherwise he will not be allowed to have the food. This time Chander was in real trouble to approach whom. He kept sitting in his home and thought about how to get the money. As the evening approached he got more worried and moves out from home to railway station to find some job.

He found a very old man who was waiting to a Kuli to pick his luggage. Immediately Chader went to him and asked him to give some money against the help. Chander picked up the entire luggage and kept it inside the train. He did not have experience of holding and carrying the luggage so he felt the pain in doing that but he managed it somehow. The old man gave him a rupee coin. He took that money and reached his home. His father was waiting for him. He asked Chander, " Have you earned something today?"

Chander showed the coin to him. Again his father asked him to throw the coin in the well. This time Chander resisted doing so. He said, "Do you know with so much of effort I have earned this money. And you are asking me to throw it in a well. Why should I throw my hard earned money in the well?

Dhanraj said, "Son, I just wanted to make you realize that money is earned with hard work and the person who has done so can understand the value of that money. Now I have no problem in handing over my entire business to you.

ATTITUDE TOWARDS LIFE....

A professor started to address the class by holding a glass of water in his hand. He showed that glass to all students and asked, " What could be the weight of this glass in your observation?"

"50 grams,.100 grams…….125 grams………" students replied differently.

"Till I don't measure it I can not tell you the exact weight", professor replied. " But my question is, if I keep holding this for some minutes then what will happen?"

"Nothing", the students said.

"Okay! If I hold it for an hour", professor asked.

One student said, " Your hand will start paining".

"Very true, if I hold it for a day, then?"

" Your hand will get jammed, muscles will get strained and it may also become functionless for some time. You may also need to consult the doctor", one student replied.

"Very good, but tell me whether the weight of glass change during all this period?" The professor asked.

"No", students replied.

"Then why the muscles will feel the strain and hand will have the pain? What could be solution to it?"

Students began to think seriously and one of them replied, " Put the glass down".

"Correct" the professor replied. The problems in life are also similar. If you hold them for some time, it's okay. If you will think about them for a long time, you may feel the headache. If you hold them further then it may make you so dependant that you may not be able to do anything else.

"Its important to think about the problem that you face in your life but it's more important to have faith in God and leave your tensions before going to bed. Sleep peacefully and you will feel very fresh next day. You will be stronger to face any problem and challenge in your life.

MORALE:

HAVE YOU KEPT YOUR GLASS DOWN WHEN YOU MOVED OUT FROM YOUR OFFICE TODAY?

ONCE MORE, MAKES ALL THE DIFFRENCE, MANY TIMES

Two frogs fell into a shallow well. And their friends started shouting instructions. Do this and do that.

After a while the frogs outside the well realized that it was a hopeless case. And they suggested them to await their death! One frog accepted the faith and did nothing. And the other frog kept on jumping. The frogs outside the well started shouting again and again and gestured to the second frog to give up.

After a while the second frog gave himself a big push and he was finally out of the well.

There was a lot of excitement and happiness. And the frogs asked the second frog why he kept jumping when they were shouting instructions to give up! And the second frog proudly replied , "I am deaf! I did not hear you but saw you as if you were encouraging me".

MORALE:

Friends, listen to many people and every opinion but do what you think you can do! Become a CAN person.

WHAT WILL PEOPLE SAY, ABRAHAM LINCOLN!

There was one man in this world, who believed in all that has been said above, and who became a “lighthouse” for millions of stressful people who followed him. His name was Abraham Lincoln. His resumes is as follows:

Age.22, failed in business.

Age.23, ran for legislature and was defeated

Age 24, failed again in business.

Age.25, elected to legislature

Age 26, sweetheart died.

Age 27, had a nervous breakdown.

Age 29, defeated for speaker

Age 31, defeated for elector

Age 34, defeated for Congress.

Age 37, elected to Congress

Age 39, defeated for Congress

Age 46, defeated for Senate

Age 47, defeated for Vice president

Age 49, defeated for Senate

Age 51, elected President of the United States of America

Abraham Lincoln did not bother what people said about him when he failed. Even when he became the President, people still criticized him but instead of becoming stressful, he expressed this deathless line: “No man is good enough to be President but someone has to be.”

MORALE:

PROVE YOUR WORTH AND DON’T GET CONCERNED ABOUT WHAT PEOPLE SAY.

FLIGHT OF SWANS

Whenever you see the group of swans flying in the sky in "V" shape, you might think why they fly in a particular shape? Earlier no body knew the reason for this shape. Now the science has solved this mystery.

Whenever any swan open and moves his wings to take a fly, this helps the other swan to take up the flight. Like this when the entire group fly in a "V" shape the efficiency of the speed goes up by 71% as compare to the speed of one single swan.

This is why the intelligent swans fly in "V" shape. If any swan tries to get away from that shape, he starts feeling the stress and resistance, so he don't fly alone. Hence, this swan set back to his own group to take the benefit of group synergy.

When the leader of the group gets tried, he comes back by folding his wings and another swan takes the place of the leader. They also make a particular sound while flying as to motivate the swans flying in the front.  When some one gets hurt or not well, he start to fall out from the group, to help him immediately other two swans also leaves the group and come down with him. They stay with him till he recovers back or he dies. Then, go back to their group or join some other group in the sky.

MORALE:

THE NATURE HAS GIVEN INTELLEGENCE TO THESE SWANS. WE SHOULD LEARN THE TEAM WORK, POWER OF UNION AND ONENESS FROM THEM.

LEADERSHIP LESSONS FROM JACK WELCH....

Jack Welch was born on 19th November,1935 in Salem, Massachusetts, USA. He was the only child born to his parents. An avid sports enthusiast as a child, he credits the lessons he learned in a scrappy place called the “pit” with forging his leadership skills. He later graduated from The University Of Massachusetts at Amherst, and after graduation went on to the University Of Jelinois, where he received a Master’s degree and a Doctorate in Chemical Engineering.

JACK WELCH AT GENERAL ELECTRIC:

In 1960, Jack Welch joined General Electrics in the Plastics Division in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, USA, where he formed his leadership ideas. He earned a descent salary of 10500 US dollars. Despite working in a very exciting and fast paced environment, but because of too much bureaucracy prevailing in the organization, he almost quit the job in 1961. But as he received an increase in the salary to 11500 US dollars he removed the resignation thought.

Because of his good work in 8 years, in 1968, Jack Welch was made the company’s youngest General Manager at the age of 33. In 1980, General Electric announced the name of it’s 8th Chief Executive Officer : 45 year old – John Francis Welch (Jack Welch). Giving Birth To A New Paradigm In his 20 years of work at the C.E.O level, he launched several sweeping initiatives that affected every aspect of General Electric’s origin.

PRINCIPLES OF JACK WELCH AT GENERAL ELECTRIC:

1. Act like a leader, not like a manager
2. Embrace change, don’t fear it:

Jack Welch, the tomorrow driven leader loved change. Change keeps everyone alert and on their toes. It’s a big part of the reality of business. Take the business environment – it is constantly changing: new competitors, products. Any business that ignores this fact is doomed to collapse. Jack Welch never stopped re-arranging the G.E. agenda. The goal may be the same, never ending growth but he said that the tools and methods were constantly changing. He encouraged his colleagues to never stop thinking about the need for change. Only through change- “massive change” could G.E. win and Jack Welch firmly believed in winning.

In 1995, Welch took a bold step, launching a companywide initiative to improve the quality of G.E.’s product and processes. On December 12, 1995, G.E. purchased RCA, the communication giant, which includes the NBC Telecommunication Network, together found a new corporate power, placing it 7th in Fortune 500.In June1987, G.E. merged with Thompson SA in Electricals division.

Stop managing, start leading and cultivate managers:

He disliked the notion of management. Most managers in his view over- managed. Those who over managed helped to create a bureaucratic environment, which according to Welch, kills large companies. He decided that G.E.’s leaders had to change their management styles i.e. too much controlling and monitoring .The only way to last at G.E. was to get on board, to become a lean leader, to adapt oneself to the company’s value and culture.

Face reality and then act decisively:

Welch believed that whether in business or in life, those who are able to acknowledge truth are usually successful. Most of Welch’s business philosophy is based on the simple premise that it is better to own up to reality than to buy one’s head in the sand.

In Oct 1981, six months after he became chairman and C.E.O, Welch wasted no time in spelling out his revolutionary plan for a new G.E. to 120 corporate offices of the company. In short G.E.’s employees were going to stare reality in the face and acknowledge it.

The first reality observed by Jack Welch was the rising competition from the foreign companies. So he thought critical to reduce the size of G.E.’s workforce and get rid of business that had been long a burden to the company and the first step he took was scrapping G.E.’s House-wares business.

Be simple, be consistent and hammer your message home:

Jack Welch has always believed in being simple, relentless consistency and follow up on everything. Welch’s consistency has indeed helped to revive General Electric and remake it into one of the most competitive companies.

2. Building the market- Leading Company:

Be No1 or No2 but don’t narrow your market:

To make General Electric more competitive, Jack Welch developed a strategy that required all G.E. businesses to be either 1st or 2nd in their field. He was convinced that inflation would become the most prominent enemy in 1980’s leading to slower worldwide growth. Therefore, he always insisted upon being the No1 or No2 leanest, lowest-cost worldwide producers of quality goods and services or have a technological edge.

He always believed in the surprise move i.e. the bold play. He was confident that General Electric would prosper if he acquires and divests companies and remained focussed.

 Fix, close or sell:

In the early 90’s, NBC Telecommunication Company, which was acquired by General Electric in the 80’s was facing very difficult to compete with the other US competitors, Welch decided to fix NBC with a series of quick and clever decisions. Jack Welch and the then President of NBC Mr. Bob Wright, decided to replace current managers with more business-minded entreprenual leaders. Once this was in place, both were confident that NBC could indeed be “fixed”.

 Don’t focus on the numbers:

Jack Welch’s philosophy was that numbers aren’t the vision, numbers are the product and he never used to talk about numbers. The three measurements he believed to live by would be employee satisfaction, customer satisfaction and cash flow.

Sharing ideas across business:

Jack Welch said that G.E.’s core competency was sharing ideas across businesses, across what he called the boundary-less organisation and that the company viewed itself as a laboratories that shared ideas, financial resources and managers. Be an open learning organisation. An idea can be from any source. So, we will search the globe for ideas. We will share what we know from others to get what they know.

3. Forging the boundaryless organisation :

Get rid of the managers, get rid of the bureaucracy:
When Jack Welch took over G.E. in early 80’s, it appeared to be one of the strongest companies in the USA. He wanted to make the company more competitive. At that time, no other American business leader was prepared to do what Jack Welch did. He became the pioneer of “Downsizing”. He believed that a vast, bloated bureaucracy had grown up at G.E. and it was chocking initiative and enthusiasm. Jack Welch successfully cut down G.E.’s vaunted bureaucracy.

Be lean and agile like a small company:

Jack Welch believed that to survive in an increasingly competitive environment, large companies like G.E. must stop behaving and thinking like large companies. They should get lean, agile and start thinking like a small company. At first, he dealt with those layers of management that he believed, were clogging the G.E. machine. Thus, he removed the entire 2nd and 3rd levels of management- the sectors and the groups.
The new arrangement proved very clean, simple and effective. After this arrangement, people in the organisation could communicate well. They move fast as they knew the penalties for hesitation in the market place.

Tear down the boundaries and use the brains of every worker:

Jack Welch felt that there were far too many boundaries within General Electric such as:

Management Layers Engineering and marketing people G.E. and its customers G.E. and the whole outside community Boundarylessness, for Welch defines G.E. as an open, informal company whose employees can move swiftly and effortlessly and where they can connect to the outside world just as quickly and effectively.

In 1989 he designed a 10-year program called “WORK-OUT”, wherein workers were given freedom to share their views with their managers. Through this program, Jack Welch gave the employees the right and responsibility to come up with their own idea for solving problems. The main idea was to remove the “boss element” from G.E. The goal was to give everyone a say in the way the organisation was managed- to keep bosses from dictating every step in the decision making process. By getting more involvement on the side of the employees, Welch argued that they would be helping to strengthen G.E.’s businesses and healthy growing businesses were the best guarantee for job security.

4. Push Service and globalization for Double digit Growth :

Jack Welch always thought of growing G.E.’s business. In the past, G.E.’s manufacturing business consisted of lightbulbs, home appliances, etc, which were the primary growth engines. Jack Welch brought the growth of G.E. Capital Services and the acquisition of NBC Telecommunication Network into a new diversified company. G.E. Capital Services earned 4$billion in 1996and NBC earned 95$ billion in 1996.

Jack Welch also brought growth in the financial services category as he made G.E. Capital from a small company into a company having 27 businesses out of which 19 had double digit growth. After this more than 60% of the revenues of General Electric came from services.

Jack Welch saw globalisation as a new reality and as a great opportunity for G.E. So in 1980, Jack Welch bought 2 strategic businesses, Plastics and Aircraft Engines to service the global market. Between 1985-95, revenues from overseas operation increased from 20% to 38% of total G.E.’s revenues. In 1987, he launched a global revolution when he acquired a French Company specialising in medical imaging “Thompson”.

Jack Welch knew that to grow at a double-digit rate, General Electric would have to make significant pushes in Europe & Japan. In the first half of 2000, G.E. became the first company to shatter the 600$ billion barrier before settling back at a level below 500$billion. In 1999, Welch launched the E- initiative business within General Electric which would soon be felt at every level in the company.

5. Drive quality through the organisation :

In early 80’s and 90’s when G.E. benchmarked itself with other companies like Motorola, Texas Instruments, H.P. and Zerox, it became clear that there was much room for improving quality of G.E. ’s products and services. He stressed on improving speed, productivity and getting employees and suppliers more involved in the company.

In 1995, Jack Welch empowered the concept of “SIXTH SIGMA”. He put in place another initiative that would transform the company. Products and Services was G.E.’s crusade to generate revenues from the consumers. Within 5 years of empowering “SIXTH SIGMA” in the company it’s revenues from services doubled, nearly reaching 17$ billion in 2000.

Jack Welch adapted “Sixth Sigma” within the company to achieve quality improvement in business processes which in turn entails the formation of a project team.

His 4 step process for achieving this was called as “MAIC” which included :

1. Measure,
2. Analyse,
3. Improve, and
4. Control

MESSAGES TO BUSINESS LEADERS :

1. Business is simple.
2. Don’t make it overly complicated.
3. Face reality.
4. Don’t be afraid of change.
5. Fight bureaucracy.
6. Use the brains of your workers.
7. Discover who has the best ideas and put those ideas into practise.
It is the last message i.e. the management secret that Jack Welch captivates the most today i.e. Learn, Learn, Learn and Keep Learning.

CONCLUSION:

Jack Welch is America’s most role modelled idol. He is recognised as a guru of management. He had the zeal and the optimism of a winning football coach: exciting, remarkable, staggering and incredible. It was clear from the day he took the company that he planned to launch a revolution at G.E. He wasted no time in executing his plans. He made
General Electric leaner, tougher, more competitive with fewer people, fewer business units and fewer management. He lead a series of revolutions at General Electric, seeking to recast a highly bureaucratic, labour- intensive corporate giant into a highly productive machine that would function with the speed and simplicity of a small entreprenual company.

In 1980’s he decided to shift ground and turned his attention to G.E. employees. He decided that the best way to give a sense of stability was to let them take part in company decision making to make employees more productive.

About Lakshmi Mittal

LAKSHMI N MITTAL (62nd on the Forbes list)

When Lakshmi N Mittal joined the steel business, he was just following in the footsteps of his father, Mohan, who had set up Ispat Steel in the 1950s.

But Lakshmi had the vision that was needed to turn a local firm into a global player. In 1976, when the Indian government started heavily restricting domestic steel production, he opened a state-of-the-art mill in Indonesia.

From there his search for non-scrap iron to feed his plant took him to Trinidad and Tobago, where he in 1989 took on Iscott, a government-founded steel firm which was losing more than $100,000 a day. Within a year, of his taking it over, Iscott was making a profit.

From then on, Mittal embarked on a decade of international expansions buying plants in Mexico, Canada, Germany, Ireland and Kazakhstan. In 1995, he transferred the firm's headquarters from Indonesia to London and settled there.

Nine years later, he was put at the number four spot in The Sunday Times' rich list for with his fortune estimated at £2.2 billion. Mittal has not been entirely free of controversies. His decision to buy the Romanian State-owned steel plant, Sidex, ran into trouble when the involvement of British Prime Minister Tony Blair was revealed.

But the buyout helped propel LNM, as his group is known, to the fourth spot in the world steel makers' league. 53-year old Mittal ranks 62 in the Forbes' list with a net worth of $6.2 billion.

Dress for Interview

While the college campus may be the perfect forum in which to exhibit your flair for the latest in fashion style, the interview is not the place to do so. With very few unusual exceptions, sandals and sweatshirts are out. Oxfords and business suits are still in. A necktie is still a fact of life in interviewing. Even though many companies have relaxed the internal company dress code, interviews still follow the conservative standard. Don't buck the trend.

Unfortunately, most college grads are woefully under prepared with proper interview dress. They feel they can "get by" with what is already in their wardrobe. Usually not. Dress for the world outside college is quite different from the campus scene. Remember that stylish is not conservative. You should be doing the talking, not your clothes.
This is not to say that you need to go out and buy a whole new wardrobe. Go for quality over quantity. One or two well-chosen business suits will serve you all the way to the first day on the job and beyond. Then, when you are making some money (and have a chance to see what the standard "uniform" is for the company), you can begin to round out your wardrobe. For now, no one will fault you for wearing the same sharp outfit each time you interview. If you desire some variety within a limited budget, you might consider varying your shirt/blouse/tie/accessories as a simple way to change your look without breaking your wallet.
For those of you, who need a quick review of the basics, follow these guidelines for successful interview dress:

Men and Women:
• Conservative two-piece business suit (solid dark blue or gray is best)
• Conservative long-sleeved shirt/blouse (white is best, pastel is next best)
• Clean, polished conservative shoes
• Well-groomed hairstyle
• Clean, trimmed fingernails
• Minimal cologne or perfume
• Empty pockets--no bulges or tinkling coins
• No gum, candy or cigarettes
• Light briefcase or portfolio case
• No visible body piercing (nose rings, eyebrow rings, etc.)

Men:

• Necktie should be silk with a conservative pattern
• Dark shoes (black lace-ups are best)
• Dark socks (black is best)
• Get a haircut; short hair always fares best in interviews
• No beards (unless you are interviewing for a job as a lumberjack!)
• Mustaches are a possible negative, but if you must, make sure it is neat and trimmed
• No rings other than wedding ring or college ring
• No earrings (if you normally wear one, take it out)

Women:

• Always wear a suit with a jacket; no dresses
• Shoes with conservative heels
• Conservative hosiery at or near skin color (and no runs!)
• No purses, small or large; carry a briefcase instead
• If you wear nail polish (not required), use clear or a conservative color
• Minimal use of makeup (it should not be too noticeable)
• No more than one ring on each hand
• One set of earrings only

If you are still not sure how to dress for the interview, call them and ask! That's right--call the employer. But this is one time when you do not want to call the Hiring Manager--instead, ask to be put through to Human Resources and say:

"I have an interview with _____ in the _____ department for a position as an _____. Could you please tell me what would be appropriate dress for this interview?"

Sure, you run the risk of someone in HR thinking you are a social imbecile, but that's a lot better than having the Hiring Manager distracted by inappropriate interview dress.

While many work environments have shifted to business casual as the work standard, business suits are still the interview standard. When in doubt, it is almost always better to err on the side of conservatism.

One final note on interview dress: while it goes without saying that your interview clothes should be neat and clean, very few interviewees give the same time and attention to their shoes. Shoes? Yes, shoes. I am aware of at least one Corporate Recruiter who forms first impressions based solely (pardon the pun) on shoes. This person does not have a shoe fetish--he subjectively judges that those who pay attention to details like their shoes are also likely to be diligent in their work life. And it is not just that person's opinion. Many have said that you can judge a person by their shoes. You will find that many ex-military officers (many of whom have found their way into management positions in corporate America) are especially aware of a person's shoes. It is not enough to be clean, pressed, and ironed. Make sure your shoes are conservative, clean, and polished.

Email Etiquette

  • Make certain that you are writing the email to the right person.
  • Plan out as to what you wish to achieve through your email; its objectives. The entire effectiveness of your email lies in the answer to question, "Did you ultimately achieve the objective for which you wrote the email?"
  • Get all the contents, facts and figures at one place before you start writing your email. You may have to refer to other related correspondence and literature for this.
Chalk out the complete contents of the email you wish to write, their sequence, paragraphing and flow for your email.
  • Your email should also include the content ( in the form of short sentences, questions, directives etc) that will elicit the desired response or action from the receiver.
Rather than asking the receiver to recall an earlier message, include the earlier message in your email. Maintain the complete thread of correspondence on that particular subject matter.
  • Give a short and yet, meaningful subject title. This is very important- give it a thought. It should not be too big or even too short. Subject title should give an idea of what the email is all about.
  • Be precise, concise and to the point.
  • Do not write very long emails (never longer than a page).
  • In case you are sending an email reply, reply to all the points raised by the other person. Add anything that you want the other person to tell you and do for you.
Send a prompt reply; that is the very reason you are using email.
  • Use proper grammar, spellings and punctuation. Use the spell and grammar checks but do not blindly depend upon them for complete accuracy or correctness. Use also your native wisdom.
  • Do not use all capital letters in your email; in email lingo it means you are shouting or screaming.
  • Do not use all lower case letters too. Why flout the conventional way of writing English language? Emails are more informal as compared to the conventional letters but never loose. Therefore, emails are more personal sort but yet businesslike.
  • Use proper layout or format.
  • Should look aesthetically appealing.
  • Use "high priority (high importance)" option only if your email really deserves it.
Use "request a delivery receipt" or "request a read receipt" option only when you think it is very important for you. Need not use it every time.
  • Do not use "reply to all" unless you really wish to reply to all.
  • Do not mark "Cc" or "Bcc" to those who are not connected with the business related to the subject matter.
  • Do not attach the attachments that are not necessary. Attach only the essential attachments to your email (and make their mention in your email).
  • Do not use abbreviations (unless they are absolutely universally understood) or emotions.
Do not use slang in your use of language.
  • Do not use email for confidential matters or matters of secret nature.
  • Use active voice, avoid using passive voice.
  • Do not use lengthy or long winding sentences. Use short sentences (maximum 15 to 20 words in a sentence).
  • Do not forward all kinds of emails to anyone and everyone.
  • Do not write or forward emails containing defamatory, derogatory, unfounded, loose, ethnic, racist and obscene remarks.
  • Do not forward chain emails.

Attitude Changes Everything........

A long time ago, a girl named Li-Li got married and went to live with her husband and mother-in-law. In a very short time, Li-Li found that she couldn't get along with her mother-in-law at all. Their personalities were very different, and Li-Li was angered by many of her mother-in-law's habits. In addition, she criticized Li-Li constantly.

Days passed days, and weeks passed weeks. Li-Li and her mother-in-law never stopped arguing and fighting. But what made the situation even worse was that, according to ancient Chinese tradition, Li-Li had to bow to her mother-in-law and obey her every wish. All the anger and unhappiness in the house was causing the poor husband great distress.

Finally, Li-Li could not stand her mother-in-law's bad temper and dictatorship any longer, and she decided to do something about it.

Li-Li went to see her father's good friend, Mr. Huang, who sold herbs. She told him the situation and asked if he would give her some poison so that she could solve the problem once and for all. Mr. Huang thought for awhile, and finally said, Li-Li, I will help you solve your problem, but you must listen to me and obey what I tell you. Li-Li said, "Yes, Mr. Huang, I will do whatever you tell me to do." Mr. Huang went into the back room, and returned in a few minutes with a package of herbs. He told Li-Li, "You can't use a quick-acting poison to get rid of your mother-in-law, because that would cause people to become suspicious. Therefore, I have given you a number of herbs that will slowly build up poison in her body. Every other day prepare some pork or chicken and put a little of these herbs in her serving. Now, in order to make sure that nobody suspects you when she dies, you must be very careful to act very friendly towards her. Don't argue with her, obey her every wish, and treat her like a queen." Li-Li was so happy. She thanked Mr. Huang and hurried home to start her plot of murdering her mother-in-law.

Weeks went by, and months went by, and every other day, Li-Li served the specially treated food to her mother-in-law. She remembered what Mr. Huang had said about avoiding suspicion, so she controlled her temper, obeyed her mother-in-law, and treated her like her own mother. After six months had passed, the whole household had changed. Li-Li had practiced controlling her temper so much that she found that she almost never got mad or upset. She hadn't had an argument in six months with her mother-in-law, who now seemed much kinder and easier to get along with.

The mother-in-law's attitude toward Li-Li changed, and she began to love Li-Li like her own daughter. She kept telling friends and relatives that Li-Li was the best daughter-in-law one could ever find. Li-Li and her mother-in-law were now treating each other like a real mother and daughter. Li-Li's husband was very happy to see what was happening.

One day, Li-Li came to see Mr. Huang and asked for his help again. She said, "Dear Mr. Huang, please help me to keep the poison from killing my mother-in-law! She's changed into such a nice woman, and I love her like my own mother. I do not want her to die because of the poison I gave her." Mr. Huang smiled and nodded his head. "Li-Li, there's nothing to worry about. I never gave you any poison. The herbs I gave you were vitamins to improve her health. The only poison was in your mind and your attitude toward her, but that has been all washed away by the love which you gave to her."
